Make Competition Work for You


Human beings are inherently competitive, some more than others. We see it every day at work, school, social activities, and especially on television. But how can you turn your competitive streak into positive business outcomes?

Be competitive with just one person: yourself. Be your own biggest competitor and work each day to be better than the last. Here are a few ways to make competing with yourself productive and lucrative for your business:

Set very high standards and fight to beat them in everything you do, every single day. Become your own worst critic, and your own biggest fan. If you think you do pretty well most of the time, change your mindset to think that you could do even better. Don’t settle for anything less than spectacular in work and home life. While that may not be an obtainable goal, make it your aspiration.

Ask the same of those around you. You want your agents and associates to be the best that they can be in every way that suits them. Encourage them to obtain their goals, just like you strive to obtain yours. There’s no reason to be anything less.

Don’t compete with other people. As we are all inherently competitive, everyone can win in whatever they choose. There doesn’t have to be a loser. When you are in competition with yourself, there’s plenty of room for others to succeed as well. No one has to lose for you to win.

Try your do your best to stay relatively calm in stressful situations. Remain in control of your abilities and know what you are capable of. It doesn’t matter what your competition is doing, it matters how well you are performing. Don’t worry about them—worry about yourself.

Even in competitive situations like a business pitch, don’t think about what the competition is doing. Instead, focus on how you are performing as a team, and focus on doing everything you can to succeed.

However, you should still pay attention to your competition and watch them closely to know all about what they do. Not only can competitive intelligence help you to perform better, but there’s also a lot to be learned from it. Your competitors are smart people who are also very successful! They too are doing something right, just like you are. Don’t strive to take them down, strive to learn from them. Why wouldn’t you want to learn from your very successful competition?
