Companies are not letting boundaries and physical locations determine their talent pool, and are allowing flexibility and options that fit their associates’ lives. The real estate industry is ahead of the curve, with agents working remotely since home Internet became the norm. Many agents balance time in the office with working from home, but as technology advances, more and more are choosing to work remotely the majority of the time. Use the following tips to manage your remote workforce to be just as, if not more, effective as an in-office team.

Letting go of face time: what to focus on instead.

A key feature of twentieth-century management techniques is the reliance on face time as a performance indicator. People seen in their seats, during set hours of the day, are assumed to be working—whether or not it’s true. But when teams are remote, how can a manager tell who’s working? And what if some agents are in the office, while others work remotely? Try to shift your focus. Your goals as a leader are to build trust, provide direction, and be specific about goals and performance standards. Work out a management-by-objective technique that works for everyone, and use it on all agents, regardless of if they’re in the office or at home.

Treat in-office and remote team members equally.

A major component of successfully managing a team with both in-office and remote agents is equal treatment. It’s easy to fall into the trap of out-of-sight, out-of-mind, but leaders need to treat agents equally in and out of office. Regardless of how the team is distributed, you’ll find more success by treating everyone the same.

Remote management techniques are useful for all managers.

All managers, regardless of remote status, should use techniques like regular one-on-one meetings, recognition for work well done, trust, and delegation of authority. These techniques will benefit more than the culture of your brokerage. They will produce better leaders, improved agent retention, a wider applicant pool, and emergency preparedness.
