3 Rules of Time Management

With the amount of tips and tricks made available to professionals today, it can be difficult to find real, valuable pieces of advice. If there’s one skill you need to hone, it’s time management. It is a vital skill, and if you don’t pay attention to how you manage your time, it is easy to fall behind. Entrepreneurs have the luxury of being their own boss, but that doesn’t mean they stop punching time cards. Removing distractions and having a system in place to manage time are effective and can have visible results on your business’ bottom line. Here are three rules to help you spend your time most efficiently.

1. Stop checking your email. Put down the phone, and step away from the screen. Schedule half hour slots into your workday to go through your inbox. Respond to emails in order of priority, to make sure you take care of vital matters first and cut down on irrelevant exchanges. Emails popping up every few minutes are distracting, and continuously interrupt other projects you’re working on. Shut it off, and schedule the time to go through your inbox at once. It will help you to focus on one thing at a time and give each task your undivided attention.

2. Make a to-do list, and stick with it. Discipline is the core of time management. Self-discipline becomes easier when you free up your time and your focus. Doing less, by delegating and freeing up your schedule, allows you to get more done and cross off everything on a to-do list. When your time is optimized, you see what’s important rise to the top. You can then put your focus on these tasks first, and complete your entire list in no time.

3. Be flexible with meetings. Be willing to take a meeting in the car, on a plane, in your home office or anywhere in between. If possible, virtual meetings can save loads of time and free you up to take care of the business. Real estate is the business of relationships, and sometimes, face-to-face meetings are necessary. However, use time and technology to help you work smarter and save time when appropriate.

Time management boils down to three steps: focus, prioritize, delegate.
