Every business owner (and human being not residing under a rock) understands the importance and impact of social media. It’s not enough to just be ‘on’ social media, you must get social on the platforms and create a presence. And social media isn’t just for agents and listings! It is just as important for brokerage owners to maintain social media channels to attract agents, increase awareness, and brand themselves as industry experts and thought leaders. You may have seen or heard some of these before, but that’s because they work and are best practices agreed upon across real estate offices and the entire industry!

Don’t be afraid of social media! People often feel that social isn’t for them or is something extra and optional they can do if they feel like it. Its not! Social media platforms are the first and most frequently searched platforms, and are where the agents you’re trying to attract are active. Give it a shot, and pick one platform to test out. There are hundreds of resources online to help guide your endeavor.

Pictures say a thousand words… or likes. Visuals are KEY on social media. In this fast-paced age, people are bombarded by so much information that a small percentage actually sticks. A post with out a photo will easily get lost in the noise and gain no traction. Don’t let your social efforts go to waste! You need to catch people’s attention and entice them to read your posts and get involved with you.

Videos go even further than photos. Because of this mass amount of information flying around, videos have quickly become the most popular form of media on social channels. They’re easy to consume and people can listen and watch when they’re doing other things, like cooking dinner or driving to a meeting. This allows people to take in your content on their own time, making them more likely to retain and engage. Its easy to create a video these days, don’t miss out on this crucial segment!

Don’t be anti-social. Wait, what? Its social media, after all. But it’s easy to become anti-social on these platforms. You can’t be mute or look like a robot just pumping out information and content one way. Ask questions, post interactive polls, host a contest, and reply to comments to let your fans and followers know you as a person. Try the 70/20/10 rule: 70% of the time, share meaningful, business-related content, and mix in 20% relationship-building pieces, and finally, 10% personal or self-promotional content. Agents want to work for real people! Humanize yourself through these channels and watch your business grow.

Never tempt the trolls. Trolls on social media don’t live by the motto of ‘if you don’t have anything nice to say, say nothing at all’. Some people just live to spout negativity and irritate others on social media. Don’t reply or instigate, it just feeds their existence. But DON’T delete their comments, unless they’re crude or filled with profanity. This lights a fire under the trolls and sets them off to spam your page even more.
