Robots vs. Realtors


In today’s digital age, technology and robots have replaced human roles everywhere you turn. With self-checkout at the grocery store, an ATM at the bank, and pay-and-print postage at the post office, you can run your errands without relying on human services once. One area where robots are not replacing humans is real estate.

Every day, there are new developments that threaten real estate agents, from websites and apps to do-it-yourself selling and buying resources. We are only at the beginning of this transformative age where new technology and business models look to reform the traditional real estate industry, hoping to gain the first mover advantage that comes with being the latest innovative thing.

Real estate agents are too valuable to be replaced by robots. Despite their best efforts, these technologies won’t take over the personal touch the real estate industry is built upon. Real estate continues to be — and will always be — a relationship-centric business. To keep up with these changes and stay ahead of the curve, there are a few skills to be mastered by brokerage owners and agents alike:

  • High ethical standards: The Code of Ethics is the most powerful tool we have to differentiate ourselves from the competition today. In acting ethically, we can prove that the human connection is irreplaceable.  
  • Beyond fact and figures: Consumers are better informed about the real estate process than ever before because of the availability of information online. As always, you must know market statistics like the back of your hand, but also specifically focus on the skills that a computer can’t perform: negotiating, understanding the nuances of sensitive situations, and conflict resolution.
  • Understanding the technology that threatens us: We must understand that the technological change that we have seen in the industry is only beginning. So we need to be better prepared for it by staying current with our knowledge of new technologies and concepts, and find the specialties that these advancements can’t perform better than a human.
